What Is a Foot (ft)?
A foot (symbol: ft) is a unit of length used in the imperial and US customary systems. It’s often used to measure height, short distances, and more.
Since 1959, one foot has been officially defined as exactly 0.3048 meters.
There are 12 inches in one foot, and 3 feet make up a yard.

History of the Foot Measurement
The foot as a unit of measurement has been around for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations like the Greeks, Romans, Chinese, French, and English all had their own versions of the foot.
Back then, people used body parts to measure things. For example:
- A cubit (from elbow to fingertip)
- A hand (width of the hand)
- A span (tip of thumb to pinky)
These were called anthropic units, and since everyone’s body is different, the length of a “foot” used to vary anywhere from 250 mm to 335 mm.
In 1959, the foot was standardized globally to 304.8 mm (or 0.3048 meters) to avoid confusion.
What Is a Meter (m)?
A meter (or metre, symbol: m) is the basic unit of length in the International System of Units (SI).
It’s used to measure distance, height, length, and width all around the world.
A meter is officially defined as the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
This definition was slightly updated in 2019 to align with the newer definition of a second in physics.
History of the Meter
The meter has had several definitions over time:
- 1793 – First defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the Equator to the North Pole along a line through Paris.
- 1889 – Redefined as the length of a metal bar (made of 90% platinum and 10% iridium) kept in France.
- 1960 – Redefined using light waves from a specific type of krypton gas.
- 1983 – Redefined again using the speed of light in a vacuum, which is the version we still use today (with minor updates in 2019).

Example: convert 15 ft to m:
15 ft = 15 × 0.3048 m = 4.572 m
Conclusion
Both the foot (ft) and the meter (m) are important units of length, but they are used in different systems. The foot belongs to the imperial and US customary systems, while the meter is the standard unit of length in the metric system.
The foot is mainly used in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, especially for everyday measurements like height, room size, and elevation. On the other hand, the meter is used worldwide, especially in science, education, construction, and international trade.
Understanding the difference between these units is useful for travel, study, and working with global systems.
Remember:
- 1 foot = 0.3048 meters
- 1 meter = 3.28084 feet
